How to resize images for websites, social media and app uploads

Different platforms require specific image dimensions. Learn the correct sizes for websites, social media profiles, and app uploads.

Why image dimensions matter

Uploading an image that is larger than needed wastes bandwidth and slows page load time. Uploading one that is too small results in a blurry, pixelated display. Knowing the correct dimensions for each platform saves storage, improves performance, and ensures your images look professional.

Common social media image size starting points

  • Facebook profile picture: 170×170px (displayed at 170×170 on desktop)
  • Facebook cover photo: 820×312px
  • Instagram profile: 110×110px (upload at least 320×320)
  • Instagram square post: 1080×1080px
  • Instagram story: 1080×1920px (9:16 ratio)
  • Twitter/X profile picture: 400×400px
  • LinkedIn profile: 400×400px
  • LinkedIn cover: 1584×396px
  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280×720px (16:9)

Website image guidelines

  • Full-width hero images: 1920×600–900px or 1200×600px for balanced quality and size
  • Blog post header: 1200×630px (also works as Open Graph image)
  • Product images: 800×800px minimum for zoom; square format recommended
  • Thumbnails in grids: 400×300px or 400×400px
  • Favicon: 32×32px (also provide 192×192px for Android)

Maintaining aspect ratio

When resizing, always lock the aspect ratio to prevent distortion. The aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height (e.g. 16:9, 4:3, 1:1). The Image Resizer on Smartweb.tools includes a lock ratio option that automatically calculates the correct height when you enter a new width.
