Percentage Calculator
Calculate percentages instantly — find X% of Y, what percentage X is of Y, percentage change, increase and decrease.
How percentage calculations work
A percentage is a number expressed as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from the Latin per centum meaning "by the hundred". Percentages are used everywhere — in finance, discounts, tax calculations, academic grades, statistics, and everyday comparisons.
Five percentage formulas this tool covers
1. X% of Y (most common)
Formula: Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y
Example: 15% of 200 = (15 ÷ 100) × 200 = 30
2. X is what % of Y
Formula: Result = (X ÷ Y) × 100
Example: 45 is what % of 180? = (45 ÷ 180) × 100 = 25%
3. Percentage change (increase or decrease)
Formula: Result = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100
Example: Price changed from 500 to 650 = ((650 − 500) ÷ 500) × 100 = 30% increase
4. Increase a value by %
Formula: Result = Value × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
Example: 1000 increased by 20% = 1000 × 1.20 = 1200
5. Decrease a value by %
Formula: Result = Value × (1 − Rate ÷ 100)
Example: 800 decreased by 25% = 800 × 0.75 = 600
